Store Closing - Press Release
We will be closing our doors on December 31 of this year, after 57 years of serving the community.
Owner and manager Karen (Mulholland) McKenzie and co-manager Judy Mulholland say, “We would like to thank the many loyal customers we have enjoyed knowing over the years. We’d also like to express our deep sense of grief over no longer being able to provide this service to our customers and our community that chose to shop in-store other than our competitors like the internet. Our prayer is that a young business person with a heart for this type of store will come to the area and open a great shop that will meet the changing needs in the current buying culture.”
The Christian Book & Gift Shop has been owned by the Mulholland family since 1957. The 7,500-square-foot store is one of the largest of its kind in the region, and sells books, Bibles, music, DVDs, apparel, cards and lifestyle gifts as well as church supplies. Earlier this year, the 800 N. Broadway block that the store occupies was sold to the neighboring Samaritan Bethany nursing home. The Mulholland family approached several Christian retailer chains looking for a buyer for the store, but was unable to find one. So we will be hosting a closing sale through the end of the year.
Our store has a staff of 11 dedicated employees, many of whom have been with the bookstore through several building expansions and countless story times, summer tent sales, and events with local and national Christian authors.
ABOUT CHRISTIAN BOOK & GIFT SHOP
In 1957 Dennis and Elaine Mulholland bought the Home Book Shop from Harry Boyer and opened Christian Book & Gift Shop (CB&G). They operated the store for years out of the family’s home on North Broadway, continuing to live next door after the store expanded and a conventional retail space was built at 815 N Broadway. Elaine managed the store, raising their four children at the same time, while Dennis worked at a wholesale bakery. Eventually, the business grew enough for Dennis to quit his job and be in the store full-time.
CB&G has gone through several expansions throughout the years, and most recently, a renovation due to roof damage. The store has been managed by several members of the family, including Kelvin Mulholland, Judy Mulholland, and Karen McKenzie, who took on ownership of the store after Dennis Mulholland passed away in 2008 and Elaine Mulholland passed away in 2013.
